3 Day Itinerary for families

Morning

After enjoying a delicious breakfast, it’s time to set off and explore Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands on foot! Choose between one of two of the below locations.

First stop, is to Dún na Sí Amenity & Heritage Park, which is only a 10-minute drive from Athlone. Get ready to travel back in time as you wander through the Teach Ceoil, the ring fort with its stone-age buildings, the hedge school & many more. Whether you fancy a walk in the fresh air or a real taste of history, a visit to Dún na Sí is sure to delight.

One of Ireland’s best hidden secrets is Rindoon Medieval Town, which is a 13th century abandoned medieval town. This place has slept undisturbed for centuries.  You won’t find any visit centre around here; this is the real deal! Just a few km’s away you’ll find the village of Lecarrow. With two great pubs and one of the best restaurants in the country, it’s the perfect place to relax after a stroll through time.

Puckered up for adventure, spin off to Portlick Millennium Forest. With fairy lodgings dotted on the trees, it’s a hit with the kids! As you thread along the shoreline of Lough Rea, take in the sweeping views.

Afternoon

After all that walking and exploring, no doubt you will be in need of a rest! There is no better place to unwind than back at the Hotel and retreating to the Pool. Mum and Dad, you can make use of the steam room and sauna!

Evening

You are sure to have worked up an appetite by now! Luckily you don’t have far to go… located right opposite the hotel is a very family friendly authentic Italian Restaurant, II Colosseo. They even go as far to offer toys to settle young kids and have a fantastic kid’s menu.

Morning

Find yourself in an idyllic country setting, cut off from Athlone Town. Gallop to Athlone Equestrian Centre and spend the morning trotting about! Regardless of your age or riding ability your needs will be catered for.

Early Afternoon

Bounce, Slide and Splash along Ireland’s largest inflatable Waterpark. No matter what the weather brings, you are guaranteed to have fun at Baysports Waterpark!  With a range of other activities including kayaking, rafting, boat trips & much more, we’re sure you’ll find just about anything for everyone!

Late Afternoon

After you get all dried up, hop in the car and spin to Woodview Mini Golf, which is only 5 minutes from Bay Sports. It offers a wide variety of shots and difficult breaking greens.  A great family outing is guaranteed!

Evening

After a fun filled day with all the family, return to the hotel for a bite to eat in Elements Bistro or Quayside Bar & Lounge or relax in your spacious family room with our in-room dining option. Click here to view our menus. Weather Dependent, dine outside on the beautiful terrace area which overlooks the River Shannon. Subject to availability and weather a BBQ may be an option.

Morning

Only a 10 minutes’ drive from the hotel, the whole family can get a whole lot closer to nature! Glendeer Pet Farm has something for every age, including: cuddly, cheeky animals, playgrounds, fairy trail, traditional farm cottage and lots more! There are plenty of facilities under cover so it is an enjoyable day out rain or shine! Say hello to Alfie and Angie the alpaca’s, for us!

Early Afternoon

Step back in time and sail with the Vikings! Travel upriver with Viking Mike and his crew, to the majestic Lough Ree (75 mins) or downstream to the famous monastic settlement at Clonmacnoise (90mins one way). Hear stories about Viking hoards, high kings, big battles and saintly scholars. With sailings every day, it’s the perfect way to get the whole family out on the water.

Late Afternoon 

Spent the rest of the afternoon, at one of Ireland’s top family entertainment centres – The Planet. With so many choices, from bowling, laser lag, American pool, astro turf and arcade games… it’s a great way for the kids to burn off energy before bedtime!

Evening

If you are looking for a more casual dinner to end your 3-day trip to the Midlands, head to Eddie Rocket’s, which is a classic American Diner. Their burgers are to be a sure hit with all the family!

Alternatively, if you want to finish off your trip in style, book a table at the Michelin listed Fatted Calf Restaurant, which is only a 5-minute walk from the Hotel. We highly recommend trying out the mouth-watering Steak- Trust us you won’t be disappointed!
